Alcoa Wheels There are two modifications nearly every Jeep owner makes, suspension lift and new wheels/tires. It's no wonder there are a dizzying number of manufacturers trying to catch a share of the market. In the case of wheels alone, I could rattle off at least a dozen wheel manufacturers off the top of my head. Even if you find a manufacturer you are comfortable with, you have to pick a style, then decide between aluminum or steel.

Alcoa Wheels For some, new wheels are for greater function, and for others, the mods are simply done to improve aesthetics. This will obviously play a large role in the wheels you choose. The black "rockcrawler" wheels have become popular simply because they are cheap and made of relatively strong steel. Others prefer the shine of a new set of aluminum wheels, preferring aesthetics over strength. It's no secret that a $40 steel wheel is more durable than a $125 cast aluminum one. This poses a unique problem. No self-respecting Jeep owner would admit he spent 2 to 3 times more for a weaker wheel simply because it looked better.

Fortunately, Alcoa is manufacturing forged aluminum wheels that offer greater strength over steel wheels, with the good looks and lower weight of an aluminum wheel. Relax fellow Jeep owners, no longer will your steel wheeled friends point and laugh at your "pretty wheels". Alcoa puts their wheels through a hot forging process placing up to 16 million pounds of pressure on the wheel. The result is a wheel nearly twice as strong as steel, and up to 4-times stronger than a cast aluminum wheel.

What We Really Think

Alcoa Wheels Mickey Thompson/Alcoa introduced their first wheel, the M/T Classic, several years ago. Almost immediately, other manufacturers began to make cheap cast aluminum knock-offs. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... MT/Alcoa has recently released another wheel design called the Challenger. The "retro" look of these wheels was perfect for our '82 Scrambler project, and the strength is better than our trusty old steel wheels. We wrapped a new set of BFG M/T's on the Alcoa wheels for a performance and looks combination that is hard to beat.
