Perhaps it's just my nature; I'm skeptical of any gizmo that claims a tremendous increase in
power or driveability. I think my skepticism is more likely due to the small fortune I've
spent on other products claiming huge gains that, for the most part, fell well short of
their advertising. This seems to be particularly true with the high performance ignitions
available through aftermarket channels. It has been my experience that the majority of
ignition "upgrades" bring little, if any, benefit. I'm happy to say that there is at
least one company that still has some truth in advertising,
Jacobs Electronics.
We installed the Jacob's Ultra Team system on our Project '82 Scrambler. The Ultra Team
system consists of an Energy Pak, Ultra Coil, and Energy Core wires along with all of
the necessary mounting and wiring hardware. There are four different Energy Paks available,
ranging from marine use to full race use. We used the Pro Street model, which is said to
be good for use up to 8500 rpm.
Upon opening the box, it's obvious that
Jacobs takes great care
to insure the easiest possible installation. Every electrical connection that could
be made was already done at the factory. Even the instructions describe the
smallest details and are very easy to follow. In fact, the hardest part of our
installation was finding a suitable mounting place for the Energy Pak
and Ultra Coil. It took about 15 minutes to mount the
Jacobs
components high on the passenger side inner fender, and 10 minutes to hook
up the wiring.
After the installation, it was time for the moment of truth. As soon as I bumped the
engine over, it was obvious that something was different. First, it started much quicker
than it ever had before. After letting it idle for a few seconds, I snapped the throttle.
Even with a cold engine, there was zero hesitation. That fact may not sound like a big
deal, but the carburetor on this engine is in dire need of a rebuild and has
been giving me grief for a few months now. All of the bog/hesitation caused by the carburetor
disappeared with the Jacobs system.
These improvements were obvious even before installing the
new spark-plug wires and re-gapping the plugs! While I still
fully intend to rebuild the carburetor, this ignition has bought me more time since
the engine now runs perfectly on my short test drives.
Since I've only put a few miles on our Jeep since the
Jacobs Ignition installation,
I'll report back in a few months with my thoughts after racking up more miles with
this already impressive system.
