Vern Wallace's 1989 YJ Laredo
|
"The evolution of this Jeep has been ongoing for over 4 years. I started out to make a nice
looking 1989 YJ Laredo with a minimal lift and 33" tall tires...well here it is now!
The engine is a GM TBI 350ci V8 with all stock internal components receiving air through a K&N
filter system. Exhaust is handled by routing through block-hugging plated headers then sent
down 2½" pipes to a pair of Flowmaster mufflers. Motor cooling is achieved by a large 4-core
radiator with dual electric fans. This power plant is attached to a GM 700R4 automatic
transmission which has its fluid routed through an extruded aluminum convection cooler then
into a small self-contained radiator with its own electric fan. Bolted to the 700R4 is an Atlas
II transfer case with its twin sticks and 3.8:1 gear ratio. Attaching the case to the axles are
custom driveshafts, the front has 22" of travel and the rear has 12" of travel. The front axle
is a reverse cut Dana 44 which is narrowed to stock width, and stuffed with 5.13 gears and a
Detroit locker. The rear axle is a Dana 60 narrowed, disc brakes, and also packing 5.13 gears
and a Detroit. The axles are mounted with a spring-over using Rancho 4" springs and boomerang
type shackles. The front axle was also moved forward 2", quick disconnects installed on the
torsion bar, and a reverse shackle system installed. Due to extreme axle wrap a three point
traction bar using articulating joints and pivots was designed and installed. Custom shock
towers are used on all 4 points to accommodate the longest Rancho 9000 shocks available. To
help with the steering a Rancho steering stabilizer is also used. Traction is handled by
35x12.5 BFG Mud Terrain's mounted on 10" wide alloys. Mounted to the front between the
recovery hooks is a trail tested Ramsey 9000 winch. On the backside there is a custom swing-out
tire carrier which has a full size spare, CB antenna mount and a detachable cooler rack. To aid
in recovery a class III hitch was installed with a removable tow hook. The body remains all
stock Jeep except where the rear wheel wells were enlarged, this modification is finished off
cleanly by mounting TJ flares which have a larger opening. The flares on the front remain YJ
although all are the extended width style. The stainless rocker panels and chrome nerfs add
more for looks than 'real' protection. Inside the Jeep all the gauges have been replaced with
Auto Meter utilizing the stock mounting locations: Tach, speed, engine temp, oil PSI, fuel,
amps, and transmission temp. The stereo has been changed to all Alpine components with the
speakers held in place with Thor speaker boxes. The adjustable high-back seats and center
console are by Super Seats and behind the rear seat is a Tuffy lock box holding all the
necessary recovery and emergency supplies. Finishing out all this is a full carpet kit and
a freezing cold A/C system!" - Vern

custom front bumper, custom automatic tranny, KC lights, rebuilt 4 cylinder 2.5 liter w/ fuel

and back. This is definately a strong Jeep. As you can see, we like the mud."
