Wrangler NW Power Products

One of the few items left to address under the hood of our Project Scrambler is the electrical system. We were still using the original 42-amp alternator and small group-24 battery, which isn't exactly the electrical power one dreams of. With a winch on the way, we were going to need to upgrade the charging system to operate the winch and to increase reliability while venturing far from civilization. One call to Wrangler Power Products solved both issues.

We have dealt with Wrangler in the past and their products are very high quality and we didn't even consider calling anyone else. Steve at Wrangler recommended the dual battery tray, isolator relay, and 100-amp alternator. In less than two hours we had more than doubled our Scrambler's electrical output and storage. Follow along as we install all of these electrical goodies.

Everything needed to install the dual batteries and alternator is included. No surprise trips to the hardware store are necessary.

Not only was our stock battery a small 600-CCA unit but, when combined with our tiny alternator, replacing the battery had become an annual affair.

The root of our problem? The 17 year-old 42-amp alternator. With all of the electrical add-ons (those already installed and items to be installed), this simply wasn't going to cut it.

The new WranglerNW battery tray bolts to the existing holes in the firewall and inner-fender. No drilling needed.

We chose two 900-CCA Champion batteries for our Jeep. Just one of these group-56 batteries would represent a huge improvement over the stock group-24 unit. The battery tray will also accept dual Optima batteries for even greater reliability. Wiring both batteries is simple following Wrangler's instructions.

Our newer-style GM 100-amp alternator fit perfectly in place of the old unit. Wrangler even supplies a wiring harness adapter with the alternator to eliminate the need to cut and splice wires. We ran a single 4ga. wire from the output of the alternator directly to the main battery for maximum efficiency.

So far this setup has performed flawlessly and we have every reason to expect it to continue to do so. There is no longer any doubt that when the key is turned, the starter will receive plenty of juice to turn the engine over. The peace of mind that comes with this setup (especially when far from civilization!) is well worth the investment.
